Simon has 22+ years of catchment management and river habitat restoration experience. His first large scale river habitat restoration project was in 1997 on the River Deben in the wilds of East Anglia.

His specialisms include strategic catchment planning / stakeholder engagement and the scoping, development and project management for natural flood management and river restoration schemes.

Previous leadership roles include, Director of Eden Rivers Trust (ERT), Director of the Wild Trout Trust (WTT), Environment Agency Catchment Director (Cumbria), Director REEF Consultancy Services (specialising in river restoration).

Simon has a long and successful track record of the development and delivery of river restoration and NFM outcomes set in upland and lowland contexts.  

During his six years as Director of WTT Simon developed several innovative river habitat  restoration programmes including North Norfolk Sea Trout Project, Wild Trout Wales, Cinderella Chalk Rivers Project, Trout in the Town and the hugely successful Advisory & Practical Visit Programme. 

At ERT he was overall organisational lead on:

  • Eden River Restoration Strategy.

  • Stockdalewath sub-catchment NFM programme

  • Adaptive Land use for Flood Alleviation – Interreg IV Programme

  • Saving Eden Catchment Plan & Farming Think Tank

  • Glenridding NFM Opportunities Plan

  • Co-author Wild Trout Trust Upland River Habitat Manual

In 2016, Simon undertook an evaluation of the Cumbria River Restoration Strategy on behalf of Environment Agency and Natural England.

  • River Petteril Project (2012)

Simon lead ERTs multidisciplinary restoration to team that collaborated with West Cumbria & South Cumbria Rivers Trusts, The Environment Agency and Natural England. The partnership was awarded the UK River Prize for Cumbria River Restoration Strategy  in 2016.

Simon has an extensive network of contacts throughout the UK , including; farming / commoning, forestry, utilities, conservation, risk management authorities, academia and business. 

In his spare time he can be found downhill mountain biking or DJ'ing - with mixed results!
